Want an iPhone but scared of buying a fake or a stolen one. What do I check?

Before you pay:

Check the IMEI: dial *#06# on the phone and look it up on imei.info or the maker's site. The model, storage and colour must match the box.
For iPhones, confirm the activation lock is off and the seller signs out of their Apple ID in front of you.
Test the screen, speakers, both cameras, charging, SIM and battery health (iPhone: Settings, Battery).
Buy with pay on delivery from Jumia, Konga, Slot or a shop with a physical address; refuse advance payment to an Instagram seller you have not met.

Rough 2025 prices: new Tecno and Infinix mid-range 100,000 to 250,000 naira; a UK-used iPhone 13 from about 500,000. Keep the receipt; a receipt with the IMEI is your proof if the phone is later reported stolen.
