I am self-employed. Is there health insurance that covers one person, and what does it cost?

Two routes:

  1. State health insurance schemes under the NHIA (the former NHIS). Lagos has ILERA EKO, and most states now have a scheme with a low annual premium and a list of public and private hospitals. The 2022 NHIA Act made cover compulsory for everyone, though enforcement is slow.
  2. Private HMOs such as Hygeia, Avon, Reliance HMO, AXA Mansard, Leadway Health and others sell individual and family plans; in 2025 basic plans started around 2,000 to 5,000 naira a month and rose with the hospital list and cover limits.

Before paying, check the hospital network near you, the waiting period for pre-existing conditions, and what is excluded (dental, optical, maternity and chronic drugs are common exclusions on cheap plans).
